July 23, 2008

It has been a remarkable start here in Winslow as the new Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director.  Starting on July 1st, helping to get the Family 4th of July activities, parade, and fireworks safely covered was a busy time.  The Officers and Firefighters of this department continue to do outstanding work and make a maximum effort to serve the public.  Coming out of the “starting gate”, I was very impressed with their work ethic.

The level of cooperation among the town’s departments in Winslow is quite remarkable.  All departments cooperate, communicate, and assist each other as much as possible.  Winslow has qualified, concerned, and friendly people looking out for her citizens.

Our latest concern is with the breaching of the Fort Halifax Dam and drawdown of the Sebasticook River.   This drawdown has residents, especially residents of Dallaire Street, very concerned about the stability of the riverbanks that support their homes.  We have maintained open communications with the affected residents and their families by dedicating a phone at the command post for family inquiries.  This department has drawn up multi-level response plans to react to many contingencies that are possible.  We have shared them with town department heads to expedite town resources from the Police Department, Fire Department, Public Works Department and the School Department.  We stand ready to react properly and prudently to anything that may go wrong.  We have pre-positioned assets, including a mobile Command Post.  This Command Post has special communications equipment to help expedite any level of response deemed necessary by first responders. Hopefully, no emergency actions will be necessary, and by the first week of August, we hope to demobilize from the area without incident.  I look forward to working with the members of this department, town government, and citizens of this extraordinry community.
